America, and the world. If you are reading this for the first time, you are welcome to this prayer group for Nigeria, America and the world. It is a critical time for the children of God to cry to our Father for His divine intervention in the world and to revive His Church for the end-time preparation for the Harvest. Now every week we set aside one hour between 8-9 p.m. to pray. A short prayer guide is forwarded every week before the prayers. If you know of any Christian who has a burden for Nigeria or America, and the Church, please pass this on. And please pray. Attention please! If you share the burden to pray for Nigeria, join us in a 30-minute prayer by phone or on your laptop on Sundays at 8pm to cry to The Lord for divine intervention.  CALL-IN NUMBER:

This week in Nigeria:

1                 Pastor Idowu Iluyomade, the former Regional Pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), City of David, Region 20, has resigned from his pastoral duties. His resignation came after he refused to serve a three-month suspension and accept a transfer to another parish in Ebute Meta. According to Vanguard, a close associate to the pastor has submitted his resignation to the RCCG governing council but yet to be accepted.

2                 The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, has lamented that the state was hit by the Japa with a deficit of 30,000 medical professionals. Mr Abayomi said the state is constrained by the increasing dearth of doctors in the country as the trend of health professionals fleeing for greener pastures abroad bites harder on the country. The commissioner stated this on Thursday at the Lagos State University College of Medicine induction ceremony for its 18th set of graduating medical doctors and 8th set of graduating dental surgeons. He said the massive relocation of doctors abroad for greener pastures has imposed a negative effect on the health sector in terms of availability of manpower, thereby appealing to the inductees to specialize in various fields and contribute to improving the health sector in Nigeria.

This week in America:

1                 The Phoenix Police Department has for years violated the constitutional rights of residents experiencing homelessness and regularly discriminated against minority communities, according to a Justice Department report released Thursday. Justice Department investigators found that Phoenix police targets “people experiencing homelessness, retaliates against people who criticize the police, and disproportionately uses force against people with behavioral health disabilities.” The report also found that officers disproportionately enforce laws more severely against Black, Hispanic, and Native American people than against White people engaged in the same behaviors. The blistering report marks the end of a nearly three-year investigation into the police department that began in the wake of several high-profile incidents, including the 2020 fatal police shooting of a man in a parked car. This investigation was the first time that a department’s so-called pattern and practice investigation focused on officers’ conduct toward people experiencing homelessness – a clear warning for cities around the country where police sweeps of homeless communities have become a common response to the growth of tent cities in public spaces.

2                 Steve Bannon, a longtime ally of Donald Trump, vowed investigations and prosecutions of those who have probed the former president and his political allies, declaring at a conservative gathering Saturday that Inauguration Day in 2025 will be “accountability day.” Pointing to Trump’s recent conviction in New York, Bannon told a crowd at Turning Point Action’s “The People’s Convention” in Detroit, hours before Trump was scheduled to speak, that the former president’s allies are going to “get every single receipt.” “You are going to be investigated, prosecuted and incarcerated,” he said. “This has nothing to do with retribution. It has nothing to do with revenge. Because retribution and revenge might be another order of magnitude. This has to do with justice.” Bannon was referring to recent comments by Trump vowing to be his supporters’ “retribution” and saying that “sometimes revenge can be justified.”

This week in the World:

1                         Darfur, a region in western Sudan, has a tragic history marked by ethnic violence and humanitarian crises. In the early 2000s, the area experienced a brutal conflict that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people and displaced millions. Today, there are alarming signs that Darfur may be heading towards another genocide. For more than a year, swathes of Sudan have erupted in fierce clashes between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that have left more 14,000 people dead and displaced more than 8 million others, according to the United Nations. But their battle for territorial control has now drifted toward El Fasher, the last major town in Darfur that’s yet to be conquered by the RSF. Analysts say it’s only a matter of days before El Fasher falls to the rebels. Ethnic-related killings have intensified in Darfur since fighting broke out in mid-April last year between the rival military factions. The RSF, which evolved from the Arab Janjaweed militia that spearheaded the genocide of the early 2000s, killing an estimated 300,000 people, has however, targeted the Masalit ethnic group and other non-Arab communities. Reports indicate widespread atrocities, including mass killings, sexual violence, and the systematic destruction of villages. Human Rights Watch and other organizations have documented these abuses, which have been likened to ethnic cleansing campaigns.

2                         Eight Israeli soldiers were killed in southern Gaza on Saturday, the Israel Defense Forces says, in one of the deadliest single incidents involving its troops since October 7. The IDF said the incident was still under review but preliminary findings suggested an armored vehicle carrying soldiers as part of a convoy had been hit by an explosion at around 5.15 a.m. local time during an operation targeting “terrorist infrastructure” in the northwestern part of Tal al-Sultan. “According to the information we have at this point one of the engineering vehicles in the convoy was involved in an explosion that was apparently caused by explosive devices planted in the area or as a result of anti-tank missile fire,” IDF Spokesperson Daniel Hagari told a press conference Saturday.

This week in Nigeria:

1 One Prophet Dr Emmanuel Baruwa (JP) popularly known as Baba Talitakumi. I’m the pastor at the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church Talitakumi model parish based in Ijoko Otta, Ogun State has asked his church members not to pay tithe or give offering on the basis of the economic hardship of the members. Many people believe the Bible says we should pay for offerings in Church, and it is when we pay for offerings that God will bless us. But when somebody doesn’t have the money to pay the offering, is God not going to bless that person?, of course, God will bless the person.

2 The leadership of Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministries has debunked claims that it framed ex-members of the church identified as Femi Jimoh and Caleb Oloruntele over an alleged planned attack against the church. This was as the three individuals who testified against the former members in court over the alleged act narrated how the duo approached them to solicit their assistance on how to hire a gun to rob the “first fruits” offering of the church in the year 2008. The individuals identified as Akeem Omojomolo, Tajudeen Usein, and Fatai Adebayo revealed how they played along in the plot, leading to their arrest. Jimoh had in an interview accused the church of being behind his imprisonment for nine years without trial, over alleged armed robbery. He claimed to have been framed by the church, adding that his trial started when he met the chief security officer of MFM founder, Pastor Daniel Olukoya, at a native doctor’s house. On his part, Caleb, during an interview, said Olukoya wanted him dead because he refused to give false testimony against a pastor he identified as Femi Agboola. The former MFM usher added that he was prosecuted in 2008 without any concrete evidence to prove the allegation against him.

This week in America:

1 The Los Angeles City Council president says surveillance video taken from outside his district office in North Hollywood on Thursday shows officers from another city’s police department dropping a homeless person off on the sidewalk and “abandoning” him there and has called for a state investigation of the incident.“ A Burbank Police Department vehicle pulled up in front of my office,” Council President Paul Krekorian, a Democrat, said in a news conference Friday. “A person was discharged from that vehicle in handcuffs. The handcuffs were removed. The person fell to the sidewalk, clearly experiencing a mental health crisis, as well as physical injuries and the officers of the Burbank Police Department got back in their vehicle and drove back to Burbank, without giving any aid to this person, without determining whether there was anyone who could provide services to this person.”

2 Officials in southern Texas say they have disrupted a human smuggling operation, helping rescue 26 people – 11 of whom are in the hospital – and taking seven suspects into custody. The 26 people who were rescued endured “miserable conditions” throughout their journey into the area, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said in a Thursday afternoon news conference. Though authorities don’t know when or where the group may have crossed the border into the US and how long they have been in the country, officials believe the victims were transported inside a false truck compartment for at least three hours Thursday before they were taken to a house with no air-conditioning, no running water, and where authorities believe buckets were being used for toilets. Investigators also believe the residence was also the site of previous animal fighting, the sheriff said. “It’s miserable conditions in there and it’s just blazing hot,” Salazar told reporters, standing near the house. “Fortunately, we were able to get these people before any of them passed.”

This week in the world:

1 Israel and the Lebanese Iran-backed Islamist group Hezbollah are ramping up cross-border attacks after months of low-intensity fighting, prompting the Israeli military to warn this week that it is prepared to launch a large-scale attack on its northern border. With both sides trading fire for more than eight months, experts say Israel feels it can no longer ignore its northern front or delay taking action there. A full-blown war appears to have become more likely – even if both sides have no desire for one, analysts believe.

2 The US military’s temporary pier off the coast of Gaza was repaired and reattached to the beach on Friday morning, after breaking apart and sustaining damage in heavy seas last week, the deputy commander of US Central Command said on Friday. “I’m very pleased to announce that earlier this morning, in Gaza, US forces successfully attached the temporary pier to the Gaza beach. Israeli Defense Force engineers provided all the necessary support to ensure the safe emplacement of the pier to the beach,” Vice Adm. Brad Cooper told reporters on Friday. “The policy of no US boots on the ground does remain in effect. We expect to resume delivery of humanitarian assistance from the sea in the coming days.” We anticipate that our goal will be to deliver 500,000 pounds over the beach initially and then ramp that up soon thereafter,” Cooper added.

3 US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will travel to the Middle East next week as the United States seeks to ratchet up the pressure on a proposed ceasefire and hostage release deal that the administration argues could bring an end to the war in Gaza. Blinken will head to Egypt, Israel, Jordan, and Qatar to “discuss with partners the need to reach a ceasefire agreement that secures the release of all hostages,” State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller announced Friday. The top US diplomat “will emphasize the importance of Hamas accepting the proposal on the table, which is nearly identical to one Hamas endorsed last month,” Miller said. Hamas has not yet put forward a formal response to the proposal, which was transmitted to Hamas’ political wing by the Qataris last Thursday.

Prayer Guide: 2 Chronicles 7:13-14

NIGERIA:

· Let us pray for the Church in Nigeria where some things are happening that should not even be mentioned in the household of God Ephesians 5:3

· Laet us pray for Lord to restore The Church in Nigeria that there may come an end to strange doctrines that contradict the word of God. Pray for Holiness in the Church.

AMERICA:

· There is a growing wickedness in the treatment of the poor the weak and the helpless in America: the homeless, the elderly and handicapped in nursing homes; the strangers running for safety etc.. Pray that the Love of God may once again be restored in the hearts of Americans again.

· Pray that the fear of God and the Spirit of repentance may fall upon human traffickers who appear to be growing in numbers all across the globe today.

The World:

· Pray that even as evil people in power seem to want it, that there will be no open World War on earth at this time in Jesus Name

· Pray for Peace in the Midde East, in Ukraine, in Myanmar, in Nigeria in all the troubled spots on the globe today

· Pray that instead of world war, the Lord will mercifully bring about WORLD REVIVAL in the mighty Name of Jesus.

This week in Nigeria:

1 The Islamic State – West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists have given residents of Kukawa LGA notice to quit their communities or face death from the terror group. This is coming barely four days after killing fifteen fishermen in the Tumbun Rogo community. A resident who fled his community to Maiduguri three hours after receiving the threat, revealed this to Channels Television. While relieving his experience, the resident who begged anonymity, explained that the terrorists had gathered residents of various communities in the LGA in the early hours of Thursday, and told them to vacate their homes before Saturday, or else they would be killed. According to him, immediately after they received the threat from the terrorists, communities started vacating their communities, some to Kross Kauwa while others left for Monguno. Kukawa LGA is a local government at Lake Chad that is popular for fishing, farming and other agricultural value chain activities. it is surrounded by Lake Chad and has the presence of troops of the Nigerian Army and the Navy.

2 Ten people were killed and 160 others, including children, were abducted during a raid by suspected Boko Haram militants on a remote village in north-central Nigeria, a local official told CNN on Monday. The attack occurred in Kuchi village, Munya district, in Niger state, beginning at about 5:30 p.m. on Friday and lasting until 4:00 a.m. Saturday, according to district official Aminu Abdulhamid Najume. Niger state, which borders Nigeria’s capital Abuja, has experienced repeated kidnappings for ransom by armed groups, including mass abductions, in recent years. Some of those killed were members of a local vigilante group who confronted the attackers but were overpowered. Najume added that security forces had not yet started rescue operations. “The police visited Kuchi yesterday [Sunday] and left, nothing else.” A spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command did not respond to CNN’s request for comment.

3 Amnesty International said in a post on social media platform X on Sunday that it was “deeply concerned by the abduction,” criticizing Nigerian authorities for leaving “rural communities at the mercy of gunmen.” “Since 2021, gunmen have been consistently attacking Kuchi village and raping women and girls in their matrimonial homes,” the agency stated. “The invasion of the village by the gunmen is yet another indication of the Nigerian authorities’ utter failure to protect lives,” Amnesty added. At least 137 schoolchildren were kidnapped earlier in March in Niger’s neighboring Kaduna state but were later released after the kidnappers made an initial demand of 1 billion naira (over $675,000) and threatened to kill them all if their demands were not met.

This week in America:

1 Make America Great Again (MAGA) activists have warned there could be "civil war" in response to Donald Trump's guilty verdict in his hush money trial on Thursday. Trump supporters have reacted with anger after the former president was found guilty on all 34 charges of falsifying business records over $130,000 worth of payments to former adult film star Stormy Daniels to keep an alleged affair between them secret ahead of the 2016 election. Trump denies any wrongdoing and claims the case is politically motivated.

2 About one in three Americans know someone who has died of a drug overdose, according to a new survey. More than 2,300 adults responded to the survey, which was conducted by researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and published on Friday. Thirty-two percent of responders said someone they knew died of a fatal drug overdose. For 18.9% of respondents, the person they knew who died "was a family member or close friend." The past few years have seen more than 100,000 people die of drug overdoses annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Over 1 million people in the United States have died of drug overdoses since 1990. The majority of those deaths have been opioid-related, according to the CDC, particularly driven by synthetic opioids like fentanyl. "The drug overdose crisis is a national tragedy," said Alene Kennedy-Hendricks, who led the analysis, in a news release announcing the findings. "Although large numbers of U.S. adults are bereaved due to overdose, they may not be as visible as other groups who have lost loved ones to less stigmatized health issues.

This week in the world:

1 The Israeli military is in central Rafah, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed in a statement Friday, despite international concern and anger over its military operation in Gaza’s southernmost city. The IDF statement confirms what eyewitnesses told CNN earlier this week, when tanks were spotted in central Rafah for the first time since it entered the city earlier this month. Access to cell phone services in Rafah was interrupted on Thursday due to the ongoing Israeli offensive, Palestinian telecommunications company Jawwal said in a statement. Israel’s incursion into Rafah earlier in May marked a new phase in its war against Hamas in Gaza, which has killed more than 36,000 Palestinians, according to health officials in the enclave, displaced the majority of the strip’s population and sparked a humanitarian catastrophe that has appalled international agencies.

2 Spain, Ireland and Norway formally recognized Palestinian statehood on Tuesday, cementing a joint move that further isolates Israel over its war against Hamas in Gaza. Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris said his country made the decision, which was strongly condemned by Israel, “to keep the miracle of peace alive.” The nations had announced they would take this step last week, but on Tuesday their respective governments simultaneously approved the declaration, meaning it has now officially come into effect.

Prayer Guide: 2 Chronicles: 7:13-14

NIGERIA:

· Terrorists called Islamic State of West Africa has on Nigeria soil given eviction notice to some communities even in areas where there is supposed to naval and military presence. What is happening is unprecedented. Let us cry to the Help of the Helpless to deliver Nigeria.

· In another area of operation in northern Nigeria, The Boko Haram terrorist have continued to kill and abduct Nigerians as if the nation has no army. Let us pray for Mercy for Nigeria and an end to these attacks to which has been added death from hunger.

· Amnesty International has called attention to the constant invasion of certain villages by terrorists and the 137 children that were abducted in March! Let us cry for Mercy for Nigeria, for the youth, for children and for the many who are dying from hunger.

AMERICA:

· Pray that there will be no civil war in America.

· Pray that the fear of God will fall upon the nations of the world and that there will be REVIVAL on earth at this time in Jesus Name.

This week in Nigeria:

1 Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has called on religious leaders in Nigeria to take a more active role in the fight against corruption and cybercrime. Olukoyede, who was represented by the EFCC Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, spoke at the First Quarterly Meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) in Abuja on Thursday. He emphasized the crucial role religious leaders play in shaping the moral fabric of society and urged them to use their influence to promote integrity and transparency. Olukayode lamented that despite Nigeria’s rich human and mineral resources, corruption has hindered the country’s development, perpetuating poverty and insecurity. He stressed that the fight against corruption requires a collective effort, and religious leaders must join forces with the EFCC to tackle this menace. The EFCC chairman said, “As a deeply religious society, we believe that religious organizations and their leaders have crucial roles to play in inculcating morals, which is the foundation for integrity and accountability in the conduct of individual and public affairs. “Corruption is a cankerworm that has eaten deep into the fabrics of our society, with its attendant effects on the citizenry. Nigeria has all it takes – human and mineral resources – to truly be the Giant of Africa, but she is held back by corruption.

2 In recent years, the pursuit of wealth has become an all-consuming obsession for many Nigerian youths. The desire for material possessions, status and power has led some to adopt a “by-any-means-necessary” approach, often compromising their values and integrity in the process. However, it’s essential to recognize that this relentless pursuit of wealth can come at a great cost, not only to individuals and their families but also to society as a whole. The “wealth-at-all-costs” syndrome has led to an astronomical rise in fraudulent activities, gang-related crimes, cultism, corruption and exploitation among young people. Many have lost sight of the importance of hard work, dedication, and innovation, instead opting for shortcuts and quick fix measures. This mentality has also contributed to the erosion of traditional values such as honesty, respect and community service. Moreover, the constant pressure to keep up with the latest trends in fashion, arrogant consumption patterns and possessions has resulted in unprecedented levels of stress, anxiety and depression among young people.

3 The fear of missing out (FOMO) and the need for social media endorsement and validation have become significant source of distress, leading some to question their own self-worth and purpose in life. It’s crucial for Nigerian youths to recognize that true fulfillment and happiness come from a sense of purpose, meaningful contribution, and positive impact, not just through the primitive accumulation of wealth. We must redirect our focus towards meaningful goals and values that promote personal growth, social responsibility, patriotism and community development. One critical step in this direction is to embrace education and abandon the obsession of driving of tricycles (Keke Napepe), motorcycles and other unskilled business ventures as a means of making quick money or income. Instead, we should encourage young people to acquire enduring skills and training that will empower them for the long haul.

This week in America:

1 A United States missionary couple were among three people killed in Haiti as widespread gang violence continues to plague the country. Natalie Lloyd, 21, her 23-year-old husband David, and Jude Montis, a 20-year-old Haitian, were ambushed by gunmen as they left a church. The couple’s deaths were confirmed on Facebook by Natalie’s father, Missouri State Senator Ben Baker. “They were attacked by gangs this evening and were both killed,” he wrote. “They went to heaven together.” According to BBC, the couple were married in 2022. Their organization, Missions in Haiti, confirmed to US media that Mr Montis was the third victim. Missions in Haiti confirmed that all three were dead three hours later, BBC reports. The state department is aware of the deaths, a spokesperson told the BBC’s US partner CBS. Missions in Haiti has been operating in the country since 2000, and is largely focused on helping Haitian children. They called it “The Signing.”

2 Eleven fake electors for President Donald Trump convened at the state Republican Party headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona, on December 14, 2020. They broadcast themselves preparing to sign the documents, allegedly provided by a Trump campaign attorney, claiming that they were the legitimate representatives of the state’s electoral votes. By that time, Trump’s loss in the state – by less than 11,000 votes – had already been certified by the state’s Republican governor affirming that Joe Biden won Arizona in the 2020 presidential election. But in the weeks that followed, five of Arizona’s 11 “Republican electors,” as they called themselves, pushed an unusually vocal campaign, compared to other fake electors from states across the country, for Vice President Mike Pence to reject the legitimate Democratic slate of electors. Instead, they called on Pence to accept them or no electors at all, according to a CNN KFile review of their interviews, actions and comments on social media.

This week in the world:

1 Israel bombed the Gaza Strip, including Rafah, on Saturday, despite an order from the UN’s top court for it to “immediately halt” its military offensive in the southern city. At the same time, renewed efforts are getting underway in Paris aimed at securing a ceasefire in the war sparked by Palestinian militant group Hamas’s unprecedented October 7 attack on Israel. In a case brought by South Africa alleging the Israeli military operation amounts to “genocide”, the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to halt its Rafah offensive and demanded the immediate release of hostages still held by Palestinian militants.

2 The Hague-based ICJ, whose orders are legally binding but lack direct enforcement mechanisms, also instructed Israel to keep open the Rafah crossing between Egypt and Gaza, which Israel closed before sending troops and tanks into the besieged city and crossing earlier this month. Israel gave no indication it was preparing to change course in Rafah, insisting the court had got it wrong. Police and protesters clashed in Tel Aviv on Saturday night after a day of rallies calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and for the return of all hostages, according to several videos posted on social media. In the videos, horse-mounted police and water cannons can be seen in Tel Aviv’s Democracy Square attempting to disperse crowds refusing to leave, resulting in violent clashes. At a separate protest, police said they arrested two people “for disorderly conduct” after they allegedly left the approved demonstration site at the Kaplan intersection, headed to the Azrieli intersection and “lit fires and began to break the order, not obeying the police’s instructions.” “A police officer declared the demonstration illegal and warned that if they did not disperse the police would be forced to use measures,” police added in a statement. The clashes followed anti-government protest marches that took place in several cities across Israel, calling for the release of hostages taken during Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel on Oct 7, and for a general election situation was set to “intensify even further” if the Israeli operation in Rafah continues.

3 Ireland, Spain and Norway have announced plans to formally recognize a Palestinian state next week, in a move that is likely to bolster the global Palestinian cause but further strain relations between Europe and Israel. The three European nations say their landmark decision is the best way to achieve lasting peace in the Middle East, but it sparked swift condemnation from Israel, as its foreign minister ordered the immediate recall of its ambassadors from those countries. Most of the world already recognizes Palestinian statehood. More than 140 out of 193 member states of the United Nations have made their recognition official. But only some nations in the 27-member European Union are among them.

Prayer for Nigeria, America and the World

Leave a Comment / Missions, Prayer for the Nations  / By Mayowa Ayeni

1 The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed one of its officers identified as Adabo Mohammed for criminal conspiracy and armed robbery, among others. Mohammed, who was an Inspector, alongside five others was said to be a member of an armed robbery gang allegedly responsible for the stealing of N29.8 million from a victim in Gwagwalada, Federal Capital Territory. This was disclosed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement issued at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Friday. The statement, titled, ‘Police speak tough on indiscipline, misconduct,’ noted that in a move to uphold professional standards within the Force, the Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, stressed the Force’s intolerance to any form of indiscipline.

2 The Abia State Police Command has launched a manhunt for a motorcyclist who disappeared with three children while conveying them home from school. The children are Gideon Osinachi, 8, Divine Osinachi, 6, and 4-year-old Israel Osinach “Gideon is a primary two pupils, while Divine and Israel are both in Nursery 3 and Nursery 1 respectively. I beg everyone to keep sharing this and let this go viral. If the children are sighted, please contact the nearest law enforcement agents or agencies, or call parents on these number: 07077201667, 08034270914.” Meanwhile, the owner of one of the phone numbers on the post was contacted by our Correspondent, and he confirmed the incident. When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Moureen Chinaka, also confirmed the incident and said that investigation had been launched into the matter.

This week in America:

1. An upside-down U.S. flag has long been a sign of dire distress and versatile symbol of protest. But in January 2021, when it flew over the home of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, it was largely seen in connection with a specific cause: the false claim by then-President Donald Trump’s supporters that the 2020 election had been marred by fraud. The revelation this week about the flag flying at Alito’s home was the latest blow to a Supreme Court that was already under fire as it considers unprecedented cases against Trump and some of those charged with rioting at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Alito has said the flag was briefly flown by his wife amid a dispute with neighbors and he had no part in it. But the incident reported by The New York Times adds to concerns about an institution that’s increasingly seen as partisan and lacking strict ethical guidelines. The high court is now facing questions about whether the spouses of two of its members question the legitimacy of the 2020 election, and if those justices should be hearing cases related to the Jan. 6 riot and Trump’s role in it. Justice Clarence Thomas, appointed by President George H.W. Bush, faced calls for recusal after reports that his wife Virginia Thomas was involved in efforts to overturn President Joe Biden’s 2020 election win.

2. A former Atlanta police officer is accused of fatally shooting a Lyft driver this week, and afterward he reportedly told a witness he believed the driver was kidnapping him, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. Union City Police arrested Atlanta police officer Koby Minor Wednesday, according to a news release from the Atlanta Police Department. Minor resigned from the department later that day. Minor was charged with murder and aggravated assault after shooting his Lyft driver, a release from the Union City Police Department said. The Lyft driver was identified by authorities as Reginald Folks and was pronounced dead at the scene. The affidavit said he was shot in the head. “Our hearts are with Mr. Folks’ loved ones as they confront this unspeakable tragedy, and we have reached out to offer our support during this difficult time,” Lyft said in a statement shared with CNN. “We stand ready to assist law enforcement with any investigation and have permanently banned the rider’s account from the Lyft community.” Minor recounted to police he had gotten in the Lyft after leaving another police officer’s home that evening. He told officers Folks was talking on the phone through his car’s Bluetooth in an unknown language and Minor said he “heard what he thought was another voice in his ear talking to him but did not say what the voice said.”

This week in the world:

1. Dozens of killed and injured Palestinians arrived at Kamal Adwan Hospital on Saturday as fighting continued in northern Gaza, the hospital's director general Hussam Abu Saifya told CNN, describing the situation as “an absolute disaster.” “Adwan is a small hospital without the capacity for this large number of injuries, all of which are critical,” he said. “We don’t have enough medical supplies and medications. We are facing a medical catastrophe." Al-Ghad TV journalist Abdel Karim Al-Zweidi was among the injured who arrived at the hospital after a shell hit a street where he was filming. “A shell hit the street where a number of civilians were standing and it hit the center of their gathering,” Al-Zweidi told CNN. “I was injured and every citizen on the street was injured. A lot of people were killed.”

2. Trucks carrying humanitarian aid into Gaza have begun moving ashore after arriving through the floating pier built by the US military, according to the US Central Command (CENTCOM). The pier was anchored to a beach in Gaza on Thursday and will be used to funnel aid from various countries into the besieged strip, with most border crossings to the enclave closed and a catastrophic humanitarian disaster unfolding inside. The goal is to get about 500 tons of humanitarian assistance into Gaza through the pier daily, according to Adm. Brad Cooper, the commander of CENTCOM. That means about 90 trucks worth of aid a day, and the goal is to build up to 150 trucks a day. Over 300 pallets of humanitarian aid were delivered to Gaza through a new floating pier installed by the US military, according to a statement from Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Saturday. On Friday, the UN humanitarian agency, OCHA, said Gaza was facing a “dire” food situation with barely more than 300 aid trucks entering the strip since Israel began its offensive in Rafah. The maritime corridor is coming at a critical moment – with the Rafah border crossing to Gaza having been closed for more than a week, preventing aid from getting through. That crossing was the only one between Gaza and Egypt – with all other border points in the strip controlled by Israel.
